Rhinoplasty
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgery through which the nose shape is surgically altered, for medical or aesthetic purposes. There are different operating techniques for performing a rhinoplasty, the doctor can recommend which one works best for a patient after examination in the initial consult.
Different people will have different results with the same technique, the goal of the doctor is to achieve the result that the patient expects realistically from the operation.
What are the main indications of rhinoplasty?
correction of deformities (and possibly associated septum deviations)
balancing facial proportions for a natural and harmonious look
repair sequelae from injuries

During the first consultation you will discuss with your doctor about grievances, wishes and expectations and also about your medical history and possible risks. You will receive the most suitable expert medical advice for your specific case.
If problems are identified and nose functions as well (eg deviated septum), you will later schedule a consultation with a specialist ENT doctor.
This is the best opportunity to ask the doctor any questions about the surgery and also to see before/after pictures of other patients who underwent the same procedure.
Based on Crisalix 3D scanning technology, you will be able to see a simulation of your own nose before and after surgery during the consultation. This is very useful for you to understand the realistic expectations you could have from the surgery.
What happens during Rhinoplasty surgery?
The procedure takes between 1-2 hours and can be performed closed, semi-open or open, but generally most of the procedures can be done closed. This means that the intervention is done through the nostrils, the procedure being carried out without leaving any visible scars. During surgery, the bone and cartilage are sculpted into the desired shape to build the base of the new image of the nose.
The rhinoplasty surgical intervention can take the following shape:
reshaping of the nasal dorsum (improving the line of the nose by removing so-called “hump”)
reshaping the tip of the nose
reshaping of the nasal dorsum (improving the line of the nose by removing so-called “hump”)
reshaping the nostrils
reshaping of the nasal dorsum (improving the line of the nose by removing so-called “hump”)
symmetrisation of the nose
reshaping of the nasal dorsum (improving the line of the nose by removing so-called “hump”)
In most cases, the surgery is conducted under general anaesthesia, but if surgery is performed only on the lobe, it is possible to opt for loco-regional anaesthesia.
Post-surgery recovery
Postoperatively, a bandage is applied intranasal to be removed after 2-3 days, and a splint to be worn for a period of 8-9 days. Edema (slightly swollen nose) may persist between 1 and 3 months, and after that the nose could have a slow evolution.
The first control is performed three days after the operation, when gauze pieces will be removed.
Small red spots may appear on the nasal tegument due to the breakage of small blood vessels, as well as lower eyelid mild bruising which may persist for up to 5-7 days. Mild bleeding in the first day after surgery is normal. Avoid shocks and consumption of hard chewable food not to overload or displace the nasal pyramid.
After removing the gauze, saline nasal washes are allowed, do not blow your nose and clean it using wet cotton sticks. For approximately 2-3 weeks is recommended to avoid strenuous activities that can lead to excess vascularization in the operated area.
In the first 3 months after surgery you should avoid exposure to sun, cold and heat, as well as cosmetic treatments. Local trauma, even minor, may unfavorably influence the form and shaping of the callus and the appearance of the tegument.
The nasal pyramid can be easily deformed. Callus bone and cartilage are formed predominantly in the first three months after surgery and the shaping takes up to about 6 months-1 year, when the final result of the intervention can be evaluated.
The glasses must be replaced with contact lenses for 6-8 weeks.
